The making of a portrait
On the right side you see the different stages of a self portrait, from the original photograph to the finished painting. (Prices are stated below).
Working from photographs gives me the opportunity to search for shapes and colours for as long as I need. And this way of working saves you a lot of posing time in my studio.
At the start of a commission I would like to meet you in my studio or at your residence for an interview and to make a series of photographs. From the digital photo's we will then choose the ones that will serve as the source material. (Although it is also possible for me to work from your existing photographs).
I want my portraits to be painted as a tight composition, with a colourful palette and an interesting brushstroke. The result will be an intriguing painting, somewhat abstracted but still with a good likeness. Most of my portraits are lifesize, not too big. Nevertheless they are very outstanding paintings by the use of the afore-mentioned characteristics and, in most cases, the frontal view of the sitter.
Before I start to paint it is important for me to know which of my paintings appeal the most to you. Most of my commissioned portraits are more pleasing than the others. It goes without saying that I will paint your commission in the style that you prefer.
Advice
I strongly advise against a broad smile for a portrait painting. It can be uncomfortable for the viewer to look at a laughing person when there is nothing to laugh at that moment. Such a smile can look like a grimace. A friendly expression will provide the best result.
Pricing
Prices vary with the size of the portrait. For example: a commission for 30x30 centimeters will cost € 895, 50x70 cm will cost € 1.345 and a 100x100 cm is € 1.945. These prices are for a painting of one person against a uniform background, including 19% BTW (VAT) and without a frame.
I will ask you to pay 30% in advance. When the painting is about 90% finished I will invite you for a viewing. After that I will complete the painting and varnish it. You pay the remaining 70% no sooner than when you are satisfied with the result.
Prices for the non-commissioned portraits are € 150 less than the commissions. These prices will be shown, if relevant, when you 'mouse' over the picture.
